FDNSC's NC Schools Report Card NC Schools Report Card Welcome Letter
|
FDNSC OPERATIONSFDNSC is a fully public Charter School serving grades K-8. We do not charge tuition, and we do not discriminate in admissions or otherwise on the basis of race, creed, or ability. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. GOVERNANCE: The school has a one-person administrative staff, but no principal. Day-to-day management of the school is performed by the school's teachers in a group called The Directorate, which meets formally once per week, and as necessary in subcommittees throughout the week. Oversight is provided by a nine-member Board of Directors consisting of two community members, three parents, and four teachers. The Board meets once per month. Please visit our Contacts page to access individual teachers/directorate members and board members. ADMISSIONS: Families of prospective students are required to attend an information meeting, at which they receive an application. Names are drawn during a subsequent public lottery, and classes and waiting lists are assembled from the results of this lottery. FAMILY INVOLVEMENT: Family members are asked to volunteer a minimum of ten hours per semester at the school, in whatever ways they are able, including participating in on-site work days, PTO and other committee work, driving on field trips, tutoring in the classroom. See your child's teacher for volunteer opportunities. Additionally, families are asked to participate actively in any discipline or behavior issues that may arise. ASSESSMENT: FDNSC is required to participate in the North Carolina ABC End-of-Grade testing program. The North Carolina Standard Course of Study is the basis of learning in all tested subjects. Formal evaluations of student progress occur three times per year and are recorded on a rubric emphasizing narrative descriptions of work, rather than letter or number grades. Students, teachers and parents/ guardians meet in conferences during these times to demonstrate and discuss progress. HOURS OF OPERATION: Students may arrive as early as 7:30 AM. The school day begins at 8:30 AM (with students strongly encouraged to arrive by 8:15 to allow them to get ready for their day), and ends at 2:15 PM. All students must be picked up by 2:30 PM to avoid a late charge. Summer hours for the secretary are from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Teachers are irregularly in the classrooms during the summer. CALENDAR: FDNSC does NOT necessarily follow the calendars of Asheville City Schools or Buncombe County Schools. Visit our Academic Calendar page for our current academic calendar. AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS: At this time, FDNSC does not have an on-site after-school program. However, several local programs, including the YMCA, the YWCA, and the Salvation Army, pick up students at FDNSC after school and transport them to their sites. INCLEMENT WEATHER: FDNSC does NOT necessarily follow the closing decisions of Asheville City Schools or Buncombe County Schools. Please listen to radio station WCQS (88.1 FM) or watch television station WLOS-TV (channel 13) and listen/look for FDNSC's name. If inclement weather requires a schedule change, one of the following three changes will be implemented and announced: 1. School opens at the regular time, but our bus will not run on icy roads 2. School opens at 10:00 AM with NO AM OR PM BUS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED. Children may be brought to school no earlier than 9:45 AM. 3. School is closed. FDNSC is not responsible for, and often is not informed of, changes in after-school programs due to inclement weather. Families will need to contact their child's after-school program to determine whether or not it is open, and then communicate any changes to FDNSC. If the weather begins to turn bad during the school day, please listen to WCQS (88.1 FM) or watch WLOS-TV (channel 13) for announcements, and please feel free to pick up your child whenever you feel road conditions warrant. MEALS: Students bring bag lunches to school. TRANSPORTATION: Bus service is available for families who reside within the geographical limits of the Asheville City Schools district, and who live more than one mile from the campus. Please note that we charter school bus service from a private company. This company is under no legal obligation to continue to serve our school. Therefore, in order to maintain availability of bus service for our school community, bus behavior rules are strictly enforced. The school can help arrange car-pooling as necessary--please contact the office. |
